Several years ago my neighbor came back from spending the winter in
Florida and brought a Mangrove log back for me. It sat in my garage for
over two years and finally the neighbor asked if I could turn a couple
of bowls from it so he could give them to their friends in Florida. The
moisture content at the ends was 15 to 20%. The shavings were somewhat
clumpy. It had started to crack but I was able to get four bowls out of
it. Two had cracks I filled with CA glue. The worst I kept. Here are
the three I gave my neighbor. The bark fell off and the grain is rally
tight and we counted 150 rings in the 8 inch diameter log. One bowl
had some red in the bowl. I was able to get some nice sharp edges on
the lips of the bowls without cracks or chips. Turning the last bowl I
had the pine mounting blocks fracture twice throwing the bowl. Luckily
it missed me both times. Third mounting block held. I guess I need to
use a harder wood for my mounting blocks.
