New Location

At our November meeting the Hiawatha Woodturners will be meeting in our new home.  We have partnered with St. Ignace Lasalle High School and will have our equipment and meetings in the wood or metal shop at the school.  A few members got together yesterday ( Tuesday) and moved our gear to the new location.  Today Steve Promo and Tom Cadwalader were at the school doing three demonstrations for the wood shop classes.
Steve did a class room chalk talk with each group and then they all came into the shop for a woodturning demo by Steve.

Steve turned a mallet for the first group and then did a Box Elder platter for the other two groups.  I (Tom) ran the video system for the sessions.  I would have to say it's a win/win for both the school and the club.  Some stills from this afternoon.

Club News

Recently I (Tom Cadwalader) was asked to provide some turnings for a display at the Cheboygan Area Public Library.  I was happy to oblige.  The display was there for the month of September and garnered a lot of attention I was told.  Picture of the display is below.  There is a little bit of everything I make in the display.

Our next meeting is this Saturday at the the Moran Maintenance building.  We start at 9:30 am.  This month Steve Promo will be demo-ing how to make a mallet.  Hope to see you there.

Got Wood ?

Our home is on the market and I need to trim down my supply of turning stock.
I have a full pickup load outside under tarps, mostly maple, box elder, some beech, aspen, cherry. and White birch.  Free for the taking.  Several crotches. You just need to pick it up.
Inside I have dry and drying blanks.  Most are 6 -10 bowl blanks,  some is local some from Florida, like Bald Cypress.  Some Mesquite.  No reasonable offer refused.  I have included some pictures of the wood thats inside my shop.

All of the boxes below have blanks inside them

Very Interesting Piece.

Steve Promo is visiting James Johnson in Kerrville TX.  Some of you may remember James from the the two day hands on demonstration he did for our club a few years back.  Steve emailed me a picture of a piece James had recently completed.  It is a very interesting and complicated piece to say the least.  Below is James' description of how it was done and a picture.
Steve indicated he would be bringing the turning to our June meeting.  I for one am anxious to see it.

I bleached the cacti skeleton pcs, then dried them inbetween sheets of paper w weights on top.  Next he turned a piece of scrap log to a similar shape, size, curvature of vessel….moistened cacti skeleton panels and applied paper under and over them with sandbag over it, so they would dry in right shape.   Then he used a dremel to rout 1/16” deep depressions in the piece which is only 1/8” thick.  Coated them with black Gesso, then trimmed the cacti panels to fit, glued them in and laquered the piece.   Buffed spokes by hand.
