Steve Promo is visiting James Johnson in Kerrville TX. Some of you may remember James from the the two day hands on demonstration he did for our club a few years back. Steve emailed me a picture of a piece James had recently completed. It is a very interesting and complicated piece to say the least. Below is James' description of how it was done and a picture.
Steve indicated he would be bringing the turning to our June meeting. I for one am anxious to see it.
I bleached the cacti skeleton pcs, then dried them inbetween sheets of paper w weights on top. Next he turned a piece of scrap log to a similar shape, size, curvature of vessel….moistened cacti skeleton panels and applied paper under and over them with sandbag over it, so they would dry in right shape. Then he used a dremel to rout 1/16” deep depressions in the piece which is only 1/8” thick. Coated them with black Gesso, then trimmed the cacti panels to fit, glued them in and laquered the piece. Buffed spokes by hand.
